City of Mount Vernon

City of Mount Vernon

Population 67,292 www.cmvny.com

Created in 1850 by a tailor named John Stevens, who organized an association of about 1,000 New York City working people who were seeking to live in a community outside of New York City. Together, the group purchased five farms, divided the land into quarter-acre lots and build modest homes, schools and businesses soon followed. Today the  four square mile city has Westchester's most cosmopolitan population featuring representatives from nearly 100 nations.

Of the many famous residents to have called Mount Vernon home are James Bailey of Barnum and Bailey fame, Denzel Washington, Sidney Poitier and rapper Heavy D. The city's most famous one-time resident may be Lillian Vernon who adopted the name when she launched her mail order empire.

The city's downtown district is being revitalized with condos and big box stores and many organizations continue to spruce up the various neighborhoods. There is a thriving artist community as evident in the Arts on Third Festival.

Dining:

Bayou located at 580 Gramatan Ave. is a local favorite serving up good food and music. If you like chicken wings, you might want to give this Cajun restaurant a try. Just down the street, you'll find Ristorante Buona Sera at 546 Gramatan Ave. Described by many diners as a local favorite, you'll find many of your favorite Italian dishes on the menu. For your fresh morning bagels, try Gramatan Hot Bagels located at 552 Gramatan Ave. For something a bit different, try their flat bagel.

Recreation:
Memorial Field, formally know as City Field, was hailed as one of the finest fields in the State with its “ideal location visible from the Hutchinson River Parkway.” The courts on Fourth Street Playground, now known as The Mount Vernon Basketball Center, have helped some notable basketball players hone their craft, bringing out scouts from major colleges to recruit players. Hartley Park, in the center of the city, stands proud with its large gazebo and is a particular favorite of senior citizens.

The Recreation Department utilizes a majority of its city-funded resources towards the prevention of juvenile delinquency through offering many developmental youth programs. Continually in the forefront of change for youth in the city, the department focuses on building developmental assets for youth. Recreational activities are the key building blocks that help young people grow to be healthy, caring and responsible adults.

This department works closely with many agencies to promote the development of positive self-images and community mindedness that are necessary for our citizens to be successful. Program offerings and individual leisure activities run from organized sports to outdoor concerts. After school programs, computer skills training and other activities are made available throughout the year.
